CANCER 101: The facts according to Mainstream Medicine –
Cancer is a class of diseases characterized by out-of-control cell growth. There are over 100 different types of cancer, and each is classified by the type of cell that is initially affected. Cancer harms the body when damaged cells divide uncontrollably to form lumps or masses of tissue called tumors (except in the case of leukemia where cancer prohibits normal blood function by abnormal cell division in the blood stream).

Tumors can grow and interfere with the digestive, nervous, and circulatory systems, and they can release hormones that alter body function. Tumors that stay in one spot and demonstrate limited growth are generally considered to be benign. More dangerous, or malignant, tumors form when two things occur:

1. a cancerous cell manages to move throughout the body using the blood or lymph systems, destroying healthy tissue in a process called invasion

2. that cell manages to divide and grow, making new blood vessels to feed itself in a process called angiogenesis.

When a tumor successfully spreads to other parts of the body and grows, invading and destroying other healthy tissues, it is said to have metastasized. This process itself is called metastasis, and the result is a serious condition that is very difficult to treat. Physicians and researchers who specialize in the study, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of cancer are called oncologists. Cancer is ultimately the result of cells that uncontrollably grow and do not die. Normal cells in the body follow an orderly path of growth, division, and death. Programmed cell death is called apoptosis, and when this process breaks down, cancer begins to form. Unlike regular cells, cancer cells do not experience programmatic death and instead continue to grow and divide. This leads to a mass of abnormal cells that grows out of control.

MAINSTREAM METHODS OF CANCER TREATMENT
1) Invasive Surgery: This is often seen in the removal of the prostate or a breast or testicle.

2) Chemotherapy: Utilizes chemicals that interfere with the cell division process – damaging proteins or DNA – so that cancer cells will “commit suicide”. Common side effects such as hair loss, nausea, fatigue, vomiting…and further metasticising of the cancer.

3) Hormone Therapy: Designed to alter hormone production in the body so that cancer cells stop growing or are killed completely. Breast cancer hormone therapies often focus on reducing estrogen levels. A common drug for this is Tamoxifen. ‘While the initial findings of Tamoxifen’s role in breast cancer treatment seemed so promising, further research presented grave concerns for its widespread use. In fact the Physicians Desk Reference lists 25 adverse reactions to Tamoxifen. Some can be fatal. Side effects include Menopausal  symptoms, Liver Cancer & Liver Disease, Uterine & Gastrointestinal Cancer, Eye Damage, Blood Clots, Psychological Symptoms, Asthma, Vocal Cord Changes.

Use of CT Scans for Cancer Diagnosis/Treatment: ‘Computed tomography (CT) is a diagnostic procedure that uses special x-ray equipment to obtain cross-sectional pictures of the body. In cancer, CT is used to detect a tumor, provide information about the extent of the disease, help plan treatment, and determine whether the cancer is responding to treatment. A CT scan uses slightly more radiation than a chest x-ray, but the benefits generally outweigh the risks.’ National Cancer Institute

‘Hospitals Performed Needless Double CT Scans, Records Show: In 2008, about 75,000 patients received double scans, one using iodine contrast to check blood flow, and one that did not. “If you do both, you bill for both,” Dr. Pentecost said. Breast Cancer Study Finds Parabens in Virtually All Tumors ‘A comprehensive study published in the January 2012 issue of the Journal of Applied Technology shows more evidence of a correlation between parabens and incidences of breast cancer. 99 percent — of the tissue samples collected from women participating in the study contained at least one paraben, and 60 percent of the samples contained no less than five parabens. Parabens are chemicals used as a preservative in a number of cosmetics and personal care products including deodorant, shampoo, makeup, lotions and oral care products, as well as in processed food items and some pharmaceutical products. Underarm deodorants often contain parabens and have been thought to contribute to an increased risk of high paraben levels in the body that have been linked to breast cancer. But according to Darbre’s team, even women who did not use underarm deodorant were found to have parabens present in breast tissue.’

‘The number of new cases of breast cancer has jumped dramatically worldwide, from about 640,000 in 1980 to more than 1.6 million in 2010, University of Washington researchers report. Over the same period, the number of cases of cervical cancer has crept up much more slowly and deaths from that cancer have declined, although in 2010 it still killed 200,000 women around the world. In 2010, 51 percent of new cases of breast cancer and 76 percent of the 454,000 cases of cervical cancer were in developing countries, the researchers noted.’

Alternative Practitioners of Medicine & Naturopaths have been condemned to the fringes in their efforts to bring natural cures for Cancer to the public. I would go instantly on a raw food diet. I would make sure, if I don’t have a very rare Kidney disease, to drink a gallon of water a day with half a teaspoon of sea salt in it, because we need salt for every body function…We need electricity, and this electricity can only be produced with enough salt basically. They observed that children, teenagers & young adults that had the most sun exposure reduced their risk of getting breast cancer later in life by 50-75%.

BAKING SODA
According to Dr. Tullio Simoncini, author of ‘Cancer is a Fungus’, cancer manifests as a fungus in the body. Cancer cells quickly adapt to anti-viral drugs & chemo treatment, causing the cancer to spread. Sodium bicarbonate (Baking Soda) is the strongest substance to counter fungi. Consuming 1/2 tsp baking soda in a glass of water daily staves off cancer while flushing out toxins from the kidneys.

In the middle of a peach or apricot is a hard shell. If you break open the hard shell with a “nut cracker,” pliers or hammer, you will find a small seed/kernel in the middle that looks like an almond. Eat your RAW Pomegranates on a regular basis (always superior to juice extract) –

‘Dr. Aviram and his scientific research group tested pomegranate juice on both humans and laboratory mice which were genetically predisposed to develop heart disease. They found that pomegranate juice decreased LDL (“bad cholesterol”) and increased HDL (“good cholesterol”) by 20% in humans.

Note: The oxidation of LDL, which is believed by many researchers to be a major cause of heart disease, was reduced by up to 90%.

Nineteen patients from 65 to 75 years of age with severe carotid artery stenosis (70 to 90 percent occlusion) were given 50 ml of concentrated, pasteurized pomegranate juice daily. This concentrate was equivalent to 8.3 ounces of 100% pomegranate juice. After one year the mean carotid artery thickness was reduced 35%. During the same time period the mean artery thickness significantly increased in the placebo group. The arterial plaque in laboratory mice was reduced by as much as 44%.

In this research conducted over a three year period, Professor Aviram and his research group further showed that pomegranate juice could significantly lower the systolic blood pressure of hypertensive patients in just two weeks. Patients with preexisting cardiovascular disease showed great improvement in many important physiological measurements and pathological signs compared to the control group. The Aviram research group concluded that pomegranate juice can offer a wide protection against cardiovascular diseases which may be attributable to its antioxidative properties.

Recent scientific research is demonstrating that pomegranate may be helpful in the prevention and treatment of various types of cancer such as breast cancer, skin cancer, prostate cancer and lung cancer. Research using both mouse mammary organ culture and human breast cancer cells in vitro has demonstrated anticancer effects of pomegranate extracts. Dr. Hasan Mukhtar and colleagues from the University of Wisconsin have shown that a topically-applied pomegranate fruit extract can block skin tumor formation in mice. Another study demonstrated significant antitumor activity of pomegranate-derived materials against human prostate cancer. Yet another study shows the extracts of pomegranate can promote differentiation–the ability of cancer cells to revert to their normal counterparts.‘

Methyl donors inhibit interleukin-6: A “methyl” group is -CH3 or one part carbon attached to 3 parts hydrogen. Methyl donors have a critical role to play in detoxification pathways. Italian researchers, Armenante F et al (3) reported in 1999 that reducing DNA methylation correlates with interleukin-6 (IL-6) gene hypomethylation and increases the level of its expression. The researchers found in experiments on a breast cancer cell line that when they suppressed methylation, it increased (IL-6) gene expression in the cancer cells. In layman’s terms, lack of methyl donors leads to hypomethylation and causes the IL-6 gene to become more active thus producing more IL-6. IL-6 is a cytokine that stimulates the B cells and the TH2 arm of the immune system. IL-6 and TNF-a are known to be over active in cancer, AIDS, CFIDS, candidiasis and numerous other conditions and plays a significant role in the progression of these conditions.

Sources of methyl donors include Betaine (also known as trimethylglycine) from Red Beets or Betaine from Blackstrap Molasses, Choline from lecithin, brewers yeast, wheat germ and other sources, SAMe, dimethylglycine (DMG), MSM (MethylSulfonylMethionine), Methylcobalamin (Methyl B12) and Folic acid. The B vitamin “Choline” (tetramethylglycine) has 4 methyl groups attached to it. When one methyl group (CH3) is donated, it becomes trimethylglycine (TMG). When TMG donates one methyl group, it then becomes DMG (dimethylglycine). Betaine (TMG) as a methyl donor, and other methyl donors, reduce blood levels of homocysteine, a toxic byproduct of cysteine amino-acid metabolism linked to arteriosclerosis and osteoporosis. TMG is referred to as lipotropic and reduces fatty liver and protects against chemical damage and alcohol damage to the liver. TMG and beets have been used in the treatment of liver disease in Europe. (4)

Note: As a dietary supplement, Betaine hydrochloride is used as a source of hydrochloric acid to support digestion and while it is a source of Betaine or TMG, it should not be used as a primary source of betaine but rather as a source of stomach acid to support digestion.

GRAPE SEED EXTRACT significantly inhibited the growth of colorectal tumors in both laboratory cell cultures and in mice, U.S. researchers report. A team from the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver says mice given the extract displayed a 44 percent reduction in the size of advanced colorectal tumors. The researchers also determined how grape seed extract works to inhibit cancer growth. It does so by increasing the availability of a protein (Cip1/p21) in tumors that “freezes” the cell cycle, causing cancer cells to self-destruct.

Using a commercially available grape seed extract, researchers exposed leukemia cells to the extract in different doses and found the marked effect in causing apoptosis in these cells at one of the higher doses. They also discovered that the extract does not affect normal cells, although they don’t know why.

The skin of red grapes is also loaded with other anti-oxidants, most notably Resveratrol, whose benefits also contribute to lowering other risk factors for heart disease such as the oxidation of LDL cholesterol.

SEAWEED & IODINE – A high intake of iodine is associated with a low incidence breast cancer, and a low intake with a high incidence of breast cancer. Animal studies show that iodine prevents breast cancer, arguing for a causal association in these epidemiological findings.  The carcinogens nitrosmethylurea and DMBA cause breast cancer in more than 70 percent of female rats.  Those given iodine, especially in its molecular form as I2, have a statistically significant decrease in incidence of cancer.  Other evidence adding biologic plausibility to the hypothesis that iodine prevents breast cancer includes the finding that the ductal cells in the breast, the ones most likely to become cancerous, are equipped with an iodine pump (the sodium iodine symporter, the same one that the thyroid gland has) to soak up this element.

The Japanese consume more than 12 milligrams (mg) of iodine a day (12,000 µg), a 50-fold greater amount.  They eat seaweed, which include brown algae (kelp), red algae (nori sheets, with sushi), and green algae (chlorella).  Compared to terrestrial plants, which contain only trace amounts of iodine (0.001 mg/gm), these marine plants have high concentrations of this nutrient (0.5–8.0 mg/gm).  When studied in 1964, Japanese seaweed consumption was found to be 4.5 grams (gm) a day and that eaten had a measured iodine concentration of 3.1 mg/gm of seaweed (= 13.8 mg of iodine). 

According to public health officials, mainland Japanese now consume 14.5 gm of seaweed a day (= 45 mg of iodine, if its iodine content, not measured, remains unchanged). 

Researchers have determined that residents on the coast of Hokkaido eat a quantity of seaweed sufficient to provide a daily iodine intake of 200 mg a day.  Saltwater fish and shellfish contain iodine, but one would have to eat 15–25 pounds of fish to get 12 mg of iodine.

The inhibition of the cell signaling pathway also correlated with reduced expression of a number of pro-inflammatory cytokines, or signaling molecules, in the saliva that promote cancer growth, said Dr. Marilene Wang, a professor of head and neck surgery, Jonsson Cancer Center researcher and senior author of the study.’

“This study shows that curcumin can work in the mouths of patients with head and neck malignancies and reduce activities that promote cancer growth,” Wang said. “And it not only affected the cancer by inhibiting a critical cell signaling pathway, it also affected the saliva itself by reducing pro-inflammatory cytokines within the saliva.”

‘A turmeric fraction depleted of essential oils profoundly inhibited joint inflammation and periarticular joint destruction in a dose-dependent manner. In vivo treatment prevented local activation of NF-kappaB and the subsequent expression of NF-kappaB-regulated genes mediating joint inflammation and destruction, including chemokines, cyclooxygenase 2, and RANKL. Consistent with these findings, inflammatory cell influx, joint levels of prostaglandin E(2), and periarticular osteoclast formation were inhibited by turmeric extract treatment.‘

My son became ill with meningococcal infection in 2011 and eventually fell victim to septic shock, and nearly died. The pain was obviously excruciating.
